"I can't believe this," Elizabeth mumbled to herself.
"Oh cheer up L-Lizzie." the boy next to her slurred.
. . .
That night, Elizabeth had gone to a party with her friends. They all got hammered and hooked up with different guys leaving her, who can't drive, alone. It was not what she expected. She thought it would be more fun and it wasn't. She was sitting in the corner by herself when she noticed him. Garnett. She hated him. Despised him. Couldn't stand him. Ever since they were kids.
He walked over to her.
"What do you want?" she spit the words at him.
"Awwh. L-Liz. Wh-what's wrong?" He couldn't speak straight and he was falling all over the place.
"Get away from me," you could hear the venom in her voice, Garnett sat down next to her anyway.
"Why're you b-by yourselfff?" Even in his drunken state he know something wasn't right with this girl.
"My friend's ditched me," She said trying to get up, but he pulled her back down.
"Well it s-s-seems we're both in need of a ride." He slurred to her.
"I'm not going anywhere with you," she got up again, but Garnett got up with her.
"I-I'll pay for your cab." He smiled at her. She hated it.
"Fine." She rolled her eyes, flung her long strawberry blonde hair over her shoulder, and headed outside. She had no choice. She couldn't stay there and she had no other way home. She wasn't about to walk the streets of New York City by herself at one am.
She held her hand out for a cab and it came to her. As she slid in, Garnett slid in next to her.
"What're you doing?!" She asked.
"W-We can share."
She grumbled and gave the cab driver her address.
And here we are now. Two people who hate each other sharing a cab. Well Garnett didn't really hate her.
"I hate you. Why should I cheer up?" She asked, crossing her legs and crossing her arms across her chest.
"It's not that bad." He gave her that stupid smile again. She hates that smile.
Garnett fidgeted with his hands while Elizabeth stared out the window. She wanted to be anywhere, but here. They sat in silence for a good while before Garnett leaned his head on her shoulder. He yawned. "You know I've always admired you Lizzie," the blonde haired boy said before slipping into sleep. Elizabeth let him be. She didn't know what else to do. She'd never witnessed him like this. She kinda liked it. It seemed.. So natural. Like they were supposed to be meeting up at a party and sharing a cab home, not arguing and fighting.
The car pulled up to her house. She tried to wake Garnett, but he would budge. She had to pull the money out of his pocket, pay the man, and pull him out of the car. She dragged him up to her house and unlocked the door. She carefully took off his shoes and laid him on the couch. She drapped a blanket over him and walked up to her room.
What else could she do? Any other time she would have thrown him out. Splashed water on him and laughed. Kicked him in the dirt. But what he had said was still stirring in Elizabeth's mind. He was the only one who ever called her Lizzie. She hated it, hated him. So why is she letting him sleep on her couch? She didn't quite know the answer.
She had changed into a a tank top and shorts and was getting ready for bed when he came into her room. He just walked in and sat on her bed and she let him. "I-I'm sorry about all this." He was sobering up. She just ignored him and continued pulling her hair into a ponytail. He went over to her and took her face in his hands. His brown eyes boring into her green ones. "I-I..." He couldn't get the words out. And he kissed her and she let him. She even kissed back. All of her was shouting this is wrong! This is wrong! But it all just felt so right. She crept her fingers into his shaggy hair and he snaked his arms around her waist, holding her tight against him.
He didn't know what he was doing. He just knew he wanted her. He always wanted her. But she hated him. She always hated him. And he didn't know why. There was always this tension between them. He pulled away. She hated him. This couldn't happen.
"What're you doing?" He asked. She tasted like strawberries. He would remember this. "I..I don't know.." she admitted. He tasted like vanilla. She would remember this. She held him close to her. Her body was screaming for him, but she couldn't.. Could she? "You hate me.." His voice grew quiet. "Why?" She searched her brain and couldn't find the answer. She just did. It was what she was supposed to do, but now it seemed wrong. "I..I don't know.." she told him again.
He let go of her and turned away, but she pulled him back against her. "Don't go.." she begged. And pressed her lips upon his again. She kissed him and kissed him and kissed him until she need air and he let her. Maybe she mistook her feelings? There's a razor thin line between love and hate. Maybe she's always loved him. Maybe she didn't want to admit it. Maybe hating him was easier. But there he was. In her arms. The truth staring her in the face and she couldn't look away this time.
She pressed their lips together again. She pressed her hands under his shirt and worked him to her bed. He started tugging at her shorts, this all felt so right. She pulled his shirt off and kept kissing him. "Are you sure about this Elizabeth?" He asked between kisses. She hadn't been sure about anything all night. "I'm sure," and she was. "But call me Lizzie," she said smiling.
"I love you."
She paused. "I love you too."
And with that he turned out the light.
